ABOUT

Wilmington City Council Member Trippi Congo is encouraging all experienced and novice chess players to join him on Saturday, June 3,
2017 beginning at 10 a.m. in Rodney Square for a FREE chess tournament. Congo has joined with community members Terrone Warren and Lisa Flowers to sponsor a chess tournament for all ages and for all experience levels.

"We plan a day of fun for everyone with lots of chess players having the opportunity to display their skills in a competitive setting while also welcoming less experienced players to join us also," said Council Member Congo. "We think this could be one of the largest chess events ever held in Wilmington."

Terrone Warren, who owns BVD Barber Salon at 223 West 8th Street in Wilmington, and Lisa Flowers, who are both involved in other community events, said the FREE tournament will feature multiple chess tables and simultaneous games in the center of the City's busiest public square.

Warren said people of all ages can register in a variety of categories including grades three through five, grades six through eight, grades nine through twelve and an adult entry level category. Warren said all registered participants will receive a medal to commemorate their participation while the 1st place winners and 2nd place runners-up in each category will receive a trophy.

The tournament will also feature an open chess session for beginners or less-experienced players who want to learn to improve their chess game in a non-competitive setting. Organizers will also have beverages and snacks available for all registered participants.
